Ascarate Park is the largest public-use recreational park in El Paso County and is dedicated to sports, picnicking, fishing and other recreational activities.

Ascarate Park features an 18-hole 72 par golf course and a 9 hole executive course called the Delta 9, a 48 acre surface lake, lakeside boardwalk, fully-equipped aquatic center, playgrounds and picnic facilities. Public Works is responsible for the maintenance and operations of the all park facilities. The park provides a clean and safe environment for the recreational needs of the residents of El Paso. Ascarate Park also actively participates in the formation of public policy and programs pertaining to local, state, and federal levels that affect the park as well as recreational planning and methods of financing that affect the leisure opportunities of the residents of the County.

Ascarate Lake boasts some of the best fishing in the Southwest. The lake is home to trout (winter), catfish (summer), largemouth bass, black bass, sun perch, blue gill, carp, shad, crappie hybrid sunfish and minnows.

Anglers are restricted to two fishing poles each, with a limit of five fish per visit to the lake. Adults 17 and older: Fishing License is required; fishing licenses can be obtained at most sporting good stores.

It’s time to rediscover a tradition that has spanned over 60 years in El Paso County. The lake at Ascarate Park covers 48 surface acres, visitors can bring in their own kayaks and boats (trolley motors only), all occupants must wear a life vest at all times while in the water.

The historic San Elizario Placita is nestled in the center of galleries, museums, and churches. The Placita is available to rent for private events. For rental information, please call 915-771-2380.

Wetlands and riverside forests once graced the banks of the Rio Grande in the Paso del Norte region. They were the most productive natural habitats in the region, but today they are virtually gone.

At Rio Bosque, the environment is still changing, but in a new way. Here, a diverse partnership is working to bring back meaningful examples of the unique and valuable ecosystems once found in our river valley.

The Franklin Mountains provided most of the basic necessities of life for early people here. Today, the mountains meet a different human need – our need for time in nature. Come explore these high-desert mountains, just 15 minutes from El Paso.

Franklin Mountains State Park offers great hiking, biking and rock climbing. Visit for the day or camp overnight. Look for geocaches, bird (and nature) watch, or bring a picnic. Shop for gift items at our park store.

Explore almost 27,000 acres (about 40 square miles) on over 100 miles of trail. Carry plenty of water and a cell phone, wear good shoes, dress for the weather, and travel with a partner. Be prepared for rugged desert terrain.

Stay at one of our campsites in the Tom Mays Unit. Walk to one of 14 tent sites, or park at one of five RV sites. Rent a group camp for your next gathering. Campsites do not have water or electricity; bring enough water for drinking, cooking and cleaning.

Climb at the designated area in McKelligon Canyon or at Sneed’s Cory in the Tom Mays Unit. Bring your own equipment. Stay safe, and follow best practices for climbing.

Please stay on a designated trail at all times when you hike. Please do not drive on any dirt roads or trails (in car or ATV).

We lead hikes, bike rides, arts in the parks activities and more. Check the Events page for upcoming programs.

Call the park to ask about programs for clubs, scout groups, school groups, or any group of more than eight. We may limit the number of hikers in a tour group or cancel trips due to weather.
